Optimizing OLAP for a Telecom Firm

A Fortune 100 telecommunications firm engaged us to enable market analysis by optimizing their OLAP performance. Hey, wait, there's more!

Challenge

This Fortune 100 client had a large SQL Server Analysis Services instance serving a complex dashboard application and a set of regional market analysts doing time-sensitive ad-hoc research.  Performance was very poor, particularly when monthly reports were due to corporate leadership.

Solution

XCentium founders worked with the client, particularly IT and regional analysts to clarify pain points, processing timing, and key data.  We then prototyped a series of solutions based on best practices to determine the individual and aggregate performance improvements.  This resulted in both the implementation of relevant tuning solutions, a redefinition of the volume of historical data required and sharpening of the list data needed to support the users.

Impact

OLAP interactions which previously took 10-30 minutes at the beginning of the month were reduced to as little as 10 seconds.  Analysts were able to produce their reports in a timely fashion. Our automated testing processes identified several errors in existing data which were corrected.

  • Review of processing, queries submitted
  • Identification, prototyping, testing of possible improvements

  • Cache preloading, based on most common queries
  • Full-scale before and after testing of results.
